Norrena onboard

As rumored weeks ago, the Lightning have signed Finnish netminder Fredrik Norrena to a one year contract.

Norrena, 32, recorded 37 saves in a 5-0 victory against Canada in the bronze-medal game. He led the tournament in goals-against average (1.11), save percentage (.951) and shutouts (three), and also appeared in two games for the silver medal-winning Finns at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Italy, recording a pair of shutouts.

Norrena, selected in the seventh round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, has a 9-3 record (including seven shutouts) in 12 international starts for Finland in the Olympics (2006) and World Championships (2002, 2004-06).

Of course, this does not end the Lightning’s quest for goaltending help and I expect another signing or player movement. Just don’t look for hte big-name acquisition that everyone has been expecting.

Hi, John, thanks for sending this story to me.

I agree that the Bolts may not bring in the “big name” goalie and that they may look to another, more affordable alternative.

Already the rumours are buzzing around Montreal that Aebischer could be on his way to Tampa Bay, although as usual they’re getting stupid over the return - St. Louis or Lecavalier. Gee, what a shock.

That being said, I wouldn’t rule out “Abby” heading to TB, perhaps for Fedotenko or maybe Daryl Sydor. It’s also possible Kubina could be dealt and then the Habs could quickly sign him, but I’ll admit that’s a stretch on my part. Even Modin’s a possibility.

Just me musing out loud, though, don’t take any of this as gospel.

Kubina’s a UFA, Lyle, while I agree with you on everyone else. Modin, Fedotenko or Sydor specifically.

John: I know Kubina’s a UFA. What I’m saying is that before July 1st there’s a possibility that he could be traded to a team that would then sign him before he becomes eligible for UFA status. It’s been done before.

Has Modo already signed? Thought I saw a list of players already Bolted down for next year via this site. Then again, I have been reading far too many hockey blogs of late and could be mixed up. You guys know if there’s a list of Bolts already signed for next season?

Modin has a contract of ‘06-’07. Feaster is saying today (6/2) in the newspaper that they are still pursuing a #1.

Quote from Trib: “We clearly are not finished,” Feaster said. “We have not acquired that bona fide No. 1 guy. What we have accomplished at this point has been great, where as this was a glaring weakness last season, we feel we have some real depth at the position for now and the long term.”
