Press(ed)

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

Last year after getting shot down for press credentials, I shot a letter off Eric McErlain over at Off Wing Opinion. Eric posted a story about it and a few things happened from there…

NHL rules stated that online media must be established press agents or companies - not bloggers. But that didn’t stop Eric from getting press credentials during last season. He also struck up a dialog with Capitals owner Ted Leonis and has now presented a proposal for blogger media credentials.

Eric is an outstanding journalist and a blogging institution. Ever still, and you can call it ego if you want, but I’d like to think I had a small hand in things by failing to gain credentials with the Lightning and sharing my story with Eric to begin with.

Getting in Gear

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2006

You know training camp is getting close when the local media machine starts revving it’s engine again and covering the Lightning.

Earlier this week, the St. Pete Times came out of its summer post-free-agency slumber and published an article regarding expectations on Brad Richards to perform:

That means expectations are higher, the pressure more intense, the microscope that much sharper.

Richards said he won’t be taking that much more notice.

“When you get in that upper whatever, whether you’re first, second or 10th in the league, that means your team is depending on you,” he said.

And for Richards, 26, “That’s all that really matters.”

As for the rest of it - the media, the scrutiny, the stories written, especially in Canada, that his compensation package threw the league’s salary structure out of whack - Richards said it is superfluous.

“It doesn’t really matter at all,” he said. “I’m going to go about my business and do things the way I always do it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m very fortunate. I was lucky to get (the contract). But if it was $10, I’d probably come to the rink the same way.”

Meanwhile, it seems the Lightning are trying to push exposure for Marc Denis. He was on Bay News Nine’s Sports Connection the other night and this morning the Times published a story regarding… well, expectations.

Marc Denis said he likes to think of himself as thick-skinned.

Good thing, because the Lightning’s new goaltender is going to need some sturdy armor.

Consider the situation in which he finds himself.

Denis (pronounced den-ee) was acquired to replace John Grahame, who took most of the blame for a 2005-06 season in which Tampa Bay barely made the playoffs and was booted in five games by the Senators in the East quarterfinals.

He will play for no-nonsense coach John Tortorella, who has little patience for goofups and is particularly hard on goalies. Remember when he publicly ripped Grahame after a Game 4 loss to Ottawa?

That’s not even getting into the fact the Lightning have had two major goalies during their existence that have left their mark on the fans — Darren Puppa and Nikolai Khabibulin — and not only does Denis need to have thick skin for ribbing and catcalls he may get over the above quoted material (which didn’t include the trade for him and the loss of fan favorite Freddie Modin) but also the ability to fill those big shoes with the fans.

The Lightning faithful have seen showstopper antics in Net and they know full well when the team has been covering the goalies backside. It was evident last year more often than not with either Grahame or Sean Burke in net. There were games the two goalies stole with their own talent — that’s for certain — but there were other games where the Lightning bailed out the netminders.

Denis has to play up to his potential… And the Lightning have to play up to theirs to support him.

Bye-Bye Bling-bling

Bolt Prospects reports that Timo Helbling has been released and has had the fact confirmed by Jay Feaster. News off that site also suggest Helbling has signed a two-way deal with the Washington Capitals.

Tagged! I’m it!

Monday, August 7th, 2006

Mike Chen, trying to wake the likes of me and others up from Summer Doldrums, has tagged me! I’m supposed to write five wierd things about myself and… hey, what the hell right? Lemme give you Wierdness 101 about John Fontana:

1) I was born on a football Sunday in New York where the Giants — at 0-5 — were playing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-0 for the first time in team history). The Giants ended up beating the Bucs. I always find it ironic that I ended up moving to Tampa Bay from New York. I’d witness the Giants win the Super Bowl here (1991) and the Bucs would win their own title 11 years later (in San Diego).

2) I ran a Beatles lyrics web site for several years online. Beatlelyrics.com got 1000 hits a day at it’s height. In July 2002, Apple Corps. LTD. (the Beatles company) and Sony Music (…who represent Michael Jackson who owns the Beatles song catalog) would both send me cease-and-desist letters to shut down the site, saying I was causing grave damages by posting the lyrics online. Whatever…

3) I landed a dot-com web design job in 1998 simply by explaining my nickname on a message board (Artful Dodger) didn’t mean I was a Los Angeles Dodgers fan, and that it was a reference to Charles Dickens book, “Oliver Twist”. I came off smart enough in other baseball-related posts and discussion to earn the respect of the webmaster and ultimately land a job.

4) I have a rare genetic disease called Neurofibrometosis Type 2 that effects something like 1 in 68,000. It caused me to lose my hearing as a teenager (try going through high school with 25 percent or less of your original hearing) and ultimately go deaf. I currently have a variation of the Cochlear Implant so I can hear again.

5) I’m a movie obsessive. I can usually guess what movie is playing on TV within seconds of watching the film. It’s an annoying habit for those who live with me to have me walk into a room and announce what film they are watching (that they just put on) and how good or bad the flick is. Oh well, we all have our talents right? ;)

I’m supposed to name a few people to tag here, but I’m late posting this as is so I am going to pass. Everyone’s been asked as it stands… Well, most almost everyone in the hockey blog world.

Going once, going twice, sold!

Next up for bids on this crazy fangled inter-web…

Tampa Bay Lightning season tickets

Full-season and half-season tickets for prime seats at the St. Pete Times Forum are being auctioned online through Aug. 11, at tampabaylightning.com. Packages include bonuses such as lunch with Lightning General Manager Jay Feaster, golf with Hockey Hall of Famer Phil Esposito, a private tour of the Lightning’s locker room and autographed items from favorite players.

It’s a creative marketing tactic, that’s certain. Just don’t expect an ebay bargain (unless you are a die hard who wants one of the aforementioned extras)

artoo…? Where are you…?

Saturday, August 5th, 2006

As was stated by Ken in comments, Evgeny Artyukhin signed a 1 year deal with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Russian Elite league.

It can be looked at as a leverage move by Artoo but you have to wonder if the Lightning will still persue him with their head so close to the cap? Why do it when Mitch Fritz is avalible? Of course, I’d love to see Artoo back in the lineup for 2006-07 but we retain his rights for next year. If he can’t be signed cheap this year, he’d likely be back for the following season (with the likes of Nikita Alexeev and Ruslan Fedotenko heading out of town).
